What water temp is best for stains?

That depends on the type of stain in question. Cold water is useful for most protein-based stains (blood, sweat, etc.). Generally, it's best to avoid hot water when dealing with stains, as it can set the stain deeper into the fabric. You can use hot water for greasy and oily stains only, but that too after consulting the label care.
