Hi everyone, Matt here.
When I started Mozi Wash, I was not thinking about building a large laundry brand. I was trying to solve a problem in my own home (in addition to finding some extra freedom for my surfing).
I wanted a detergent that would clean effectively, smell more like a fragrance I would choose for myself, use thoughtfully selected safe ingredients, and that would not arrive in another oversized plastic container.
What began as a series of experiments, research, and an unreasonable number of test loads eventually grew into a lively community across the country, and outside also.
Mozi Wash looks very different today than it did in the beginning. The products, packaging, team, and scale have evolved. But the fundamental reason we exist has stayed remarkably consistent.
We believe laundry can be better.
Mozi Wash Began as a Passion Project

The earliest version of Mozi was simple. I was researching detergent ingredients, testing different approaches, evaluating fragrances, and trying to understand why so many laundry products required a compromise.
The first formulas were far from perfect. Some needed stronger cleaning performance. Some scents were beautiful in the bottle but too subtle after drying. Packaging decisions that seemed straightforward became more complicated once products had to be filled, shipped, stored, and used repeatedly. Every challenge taught us something.
In the early stages, we had no established playbook. We had to ask basic but important questions:
-
How concentrated should the formula be?
-
How much detergent should customers use?
-
Which enzymes are most helpful for everyday stains?
-
How should the fragrance perform after machine drying?
-
What packaging can protect the product while reducing plastic?
-
How do we make the instructions simple and clear?
Those questions shaped the earliest versions of Mozi Wash and continue to influence how we develop products today.
You Helped Build the Brand
It was your feedback that quickly became one of the most important parts of our development process.
You told us which scents you loved, which ones you wanted to be stronger, how you measured the detergent, what types of stains you were washing, and how the packaging performed in real laundry rooms.
You also told us where we could improve.
That feedback has helped us refine:
-
Cleaning performance
-
Fragrance strength
-
Measuring instructions
-
Product sizes and formats
-
Packaging materials
-
Shipping protection
-
Subscription options
-
Our fragrance assortment
Some of our most valuable changes have come from noticing patterns across hundreds or thousands of individual customer comments.
Building a customer-driven brand does not mean making every requested change. It means listening carefully, understanding the problem behind the feedback, and using that valuable insight to make the Mozi Wash experience better.
Improving Cleaning Performance

Mozi has always been a scent-forward brand, but fragrance cannot replace cleaning performance. You need your detergent to work.
As Mozi evolved, we continued refining the balance between fragrance, concentration, and cleaning power. Our formula uses plant-based cleaning ingredients and a multi-enzyme system designed to help address everyday oils, soils, odors, and stains.
Each part of the formula has to work in tandem. Changes to fragrance or concentration can affect the detergent in unexpected ways, which is why product development requires careful testing rather than isolated improvements.
Our goal is not to be a beautiful detergent that cleans “well enough.” It is to create an effective laundry product that brings fragrance, thoughtful formulation, and better design into the experience.
Evolving Our Packaging
Packaging has been another major part of Mozi’s evolution. Traditional laundry detergent is often sold in large, single-use plastic jugs.
From the beginning, I wanted Mozi to offer a different experience — one that looked considered in the home and reduced reliance on disposable plastic packaging.
As we grew, we learned more about the practical requirements of packaging laundry products. Containers need to withstand filling, transportation, changes in temperature, repeated opening, and daily use in humid laundry environments.
That learning process has influenced updates to our materials, construction, labeling, and shipping methods.
Our packaging will continue to evolve, but the objective remains the same: create something functional, durable, beautiful, and more thoughtful than the conventional detergent jug. Also importantly something where we contribute our bit to our planet.
Expanding the Mozi Wash Fragrance Collection

Our fragrance lineup has also grown alongside our community.
Early customer responses showed us that people did not want just one universal laundry scent. Fragrance preferences are personal. Some of you love warm, comforting scents, while some of you prefer bright florals, fresh coastal notes, woods, fruit, vanilla, or modern musks. That insight encouraged us to develop a wider range of scent profiles.
Each fragrance has to earn its place in the collection. It needs a clear identity, strong appeal, and reliable performance through the washing and drying process.
As Mozi grows, we will continue experimenting with new fragrance families, limited releases, collaborations, and products that allow you to bring your favorite scents into your daily life.
Growing Without Losing the Original Purpose
Growth creates new opportunities, but it also creates responsibility. As more of you bring Mozi into your homes, we have to become better at quality control, fulfillment, communication, forecasting, product development, and customer support.
Processes that worked when the company was small have to be rebuilt for a larger business. Decisions that once affected a few orders can eventually affect thousands of customers.
That transition is exciting, but it requires humility. We will not always get everything right on the first attempt. What matters is how quickly we listen, learn, communicate, and improve.
The original Mozi was built through curiosity and experimentation. The Mozi of today requires that same mindset, supported by a growing team with deeper expertise than I could ever have developed alone.
What Has Not Changed

A great deal about Mozi Wash has changed, but our core beliefs have not.
We still believe:
-
Laundry detergent should clean effectively.
-
Fragrance can make everyday routines more enjoyable.
-
You deserve clear ingredient information.
-
Better packaging matters.
-
Product development should be guided by real-world use.
-
A household product can be both functional and beautiful.
-
You should not have to accept unnecessary compromises.
These ideals were present when I was testing early versions of Mozi, and they remain the foundation for every new product and improvement.
What Comes Next for Mozi Wash
We are continuing to refine our detergent, improve our packaging, develop new scents, and explore products that can create a more complete laundry and home-fragrance experience.
Our decisions will continue to be shaped by your feedback, product testing, new research, and what we learn as the company grows.
Mozi started in my laundry room, but it no longer belongs only to me. It belongs to the you who have used it in your homes, shared it with friends, sent us feedback, subscribed, reordered, posted reviews, and trusted us as an everyday part of your homes.
Thank you for being part of our journey and helping us build Mozi Wash.
