Type "non-toxic laundry detergent" into a search bar and you'll get pages of confident answers. Here's the part almost none of them lead with: no US regulator defines what non-toxic means on a detergent bottle.
So this guide takes a different route. We're turning that fuzzy phrase into specific checks you can run on any bottle in the laundry aisle, our own detergent lineup included.

What "Non-Toxic" Means on a Detergent Label
Legally, very little. The FTC's Green Guides say it's deceptive to misrepresent a product as non-toxic, and the claim has to hold up for people and the environment alike. But no agency reviews the word before it lands on a label.
Shoppers also fold several separate ideas into that one word. Non-toxic is a hazard claim. Natural, organic, or plant-based describes sourcing. Eco-friendly describes environmental impact. A formula can be any one of these without being the others.
For the rest of this article, here's our working definition: every ingredient disclosed, nothing with an established human hazard at the concentration you'd meet in use, and no undisclosed residue left on fabric. Dose, exposure, and residue matter more than whether a name sounds synthetic.
The Five Criteria That Separate Formulas
1. Full Ingredient Disclosure
This is the highest-signal check on the list, because you can't evaluate an ingredient nobody named. If a label stops at "cleaning agents" or "quality control agents," the evaluation ends before it starts.
California's Cleaning Product Right to Know Act moved the industry forward, requiring online ingredient disclosure in 2020 and on-pack disclosure in 2021, including fragrance allergens above 0.01 percent. It still permits generic names for trade-secret ingredients, which is why online ingredient pages vary so much in completeness.

2. Fragrance Transparency Beats Fragrance Absence
Fragrance-free and non-toxic are two unrelated claims. The real issue with fragrance is disclosure: on a label, the single word "fragrance" can legally stand in for dozens of components.
The FDA doesn't require individual fragrance ingredients to be listed, and diethyl phthalate remains in common use as a fragrance solvent and fixative. That framework was written for cosmetics, but the labeling convention is the same one household products lean on.

So the useful question is whether a brand will state, on the record, that its fragrance is phthalate-free. The fragrance in Signature Cozy is stated paraben and phthalate free, and the fragrance allergens in each of our scents are listed by name, which is the disclosure standard we'd want from any scented formula.
Fragrance-free remains the right call in a few situations: a known fragrance allergy, skin that reacts to scented products, or a newborn's first laundry. Preference counts too. Nobody needs a medical reason to want unscented laundry.
3. Residue Behavior on Fabric
Your skin never touches the bottle. It touches whatever the wash leaves behind on the fabric, all day, which makes residue the most underrated line on any label.
Some residue is the design. Optical brighteners work by depositing onto fibers and staying there; the whiter-whites effect only exists because the chemical remains. Fabric softener quats bond to fibers on purpose for the same reason.
Surfactant residue works differently. Whether a formula uses conventional sulfates like SLS and SLES or plant-based surfactants, what stays on fabric depends on your dose and your rinse more than on the molecule itself.

4. The Preservative System
Every water-based liquid detergent needs a preservative, because water-based formulas grow microbes without one. "Preservative-free" on a liquid is a spoilage risk wearing a halo.
The question that matters is which preservative. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives such as DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, and bronopol are established contact allergens that still appear in household detergents. Non-releasing systems exist, and a disclosed one beats a hidden one every time.
5. Third-Party Verification vs. Self-Claim
A brand calling itself non-toxic and an outside body verifying a formula are different weights of evidence. Each mark checks something specific:

EPA Safer Choice reviews every ingredient against its safety criteria; it doesn't measure cleaning performance.

EWG Verified is hazard-based and stricter on fragrance disclosure than most programs.

MADE SAFE screens formulas against its database of substances with known concerns.

USDA BioPreferred certifies bio-based content only. It says nothing about safety.
Skipping certification doesn't make a formula worse. Certification costs real money, and plenty of small brands pass on it while publishing more complete ingredient lists than certified ones do. Treat a mark as extra confirmation when it appears, and lean on disclosure when it doesn't.
Ingredients Worth Checking on the Label

None of this means a listed ingredient is hazardous at the concentration in your wash; it means you know what you're reading.

Across all seven, disclosure drives the concern more than the ingredient's mere presence. An ingredient you can see, you can decide about.
Where Plant-Based and Non-Toxic Diverge
Plant-derived and low-hazard are separate properties. Essential oils are among the more common contact allergens in cleaning and personal-care products, with approximately 80 essential oils implicated in contact allergy, mostly in pure form or at high concentrations. Botanical sourcing prevented none of it.
Meanwhile, plenty of lab-made ingredients carry decades of strong safety data. Sourcing tells you where an ingredient came from. Hazard and exposure tell you whether it can hurt you.

What the Label Phrases Are Allowed to Mean
A few phrases show up on bottles doing less work than they appear to:

"Hypoallergenic" has no regulatory standard; each manufacturer defines it for itself.

"Dermatologist tested" confirms a test happened. It doesn't tell you the result.

"Free and clear" usually means no dyes and no fragrance, and says nothing about preservatives or optical brighteners.

"Unscented" can still contain masking fragrance; fragrance-free means none was added.

"Non-toxic" is unregulated, as covered above.
-
"Biodegradable" describes how the surfactant breaks down in wastewater and implies nothing about skin.

Matching a Formula to Your Situation
The five criteria don't carry equal weight for everyone. Here's how they rank by situation.
Sensitive Skin
Weight fragrance disclosure and residue behavior above the rest. Fragrance-free is the standard starting point, though it gets over-applied as a cure-all; residue from overdosing irritates skin regardless of scent.

Infant and Newborn Laundry
Same criteria, stricter tolerance. Fragrance-free with a disclosed preservative system covers most of it. A separate baby detergent is usually unnecessary if the household formula clears the checks above. Wash new clothes before first wear either way.
Households That Want Scent
Scented and low-irritation coexist when three things line up: a phthalate-free fragrance stated by the brand, a fully disclosed formula, and correct dosing so the rinse finishes its job.
Hard Water
Minerals blunt surfactants, which tempts overdosing. Follow the formula's hard-water dose instead of free-pouring, and favor concentrated formulas with clear dosing lines.
HE Machines
Low-suds compatibility matters more here than any purity claim. Excess suds trap residue in the drum and in the clothes.
Septic Systems
Biodegradable surfactants and phosphate-free formulas, which is nearly all of them now, keep the tank's bacteria working.
Concentration changes the residue math. A concentrated formula used at its stated dose leaves less behind than a dilute one poured freely. Our detergent is ultra-concentrated, dosed at 1 to 4 tablespoons depending on load size, and the silicone measuring cup keeps that number honest.
How to Evaluate a Bottle in Under Two Minutes
Run this sequence in the aisle or on a product page:

Find the full ingredient list, on the bottle or the brand's site. No list, no sale.

Check how fragrance appears. Broken out, or stated phthalate-free, is a pass. The bare word "fragrance" is a question mark.

Scan for optical brighteners and the formaldehyde-releasing preservatives named above.

Look for a third-party mark. Count it as a bonus, since its absence proves nothing.

Read the dosing instructions. Clear dosing and a concentrated format both cut residue.
When a brand won't disclose, that is the answer. You don't need to decode a formula nobody will show you.

"Non-toxic" will keep appearing on labels because it works on shoppers, and it will keep meaning whatever the seller wants until the ingredient list settles the question. Read the list, check the fragrance line, and let disclosure make the call.
